Choosing & Declaring a Major — Experience

Clock face

Step 5: Determine the requirements needed to apply to or declare the majors that you are considering.

  • Some majors are “unrestricted”: you can apply immediately.
  • Other majors are “competitive” and require an application or prerequisite courses to apply. This may be because there is a limited number of seats, or because they accept students only at certain times of the year, or because they have competitive entry requirements. In the case of majors with competitive entry, your grades at the University of Delaware are usually the most important criterion for acceptance. A packet of glowing letters of recommendation will not make up for poor grades. It is important to do well from the start of your university career.
  • To determine whether the major you are considering is restricted or competitive, visit the Registrar’s website. Some departments might also include the information on their own websites.

There are many opportunities to gain experience in potential majors or careers at the University of Delaware. Literature supports the concept that we learn and retain knowledge more effectively when we learn by doing. By participating in active learning, you will have a better understanding of your interests and skills and how they relate to potential majors.

Step 6: Explore the majors and careers more deeply through activities both in and out of the classroom.

  • Join organizations on campus.Attend career fairs sponsored by departments or the Career Center.
  • Secure an internship at a local organization or business.
  • Volunteer for service learning projects either through the University or through the local community.
  • Participate in undergraduate research with a professor.
  • Consider taking a study abroad trip that includes classes in areas you want to explore.
  • Choose classes that will not only fulfill general requirements, but also will provide you with information about potential majors.
