Note-taking — PARALLEL NOTES
Parallel notes can be useful in classes with professors who provide notes prior to (or in) class.
- Use a 3-ring notebook, with the professor’s notes appearing on the left-hand page; leave space between each point, if possible.
- Write brief observations, etc. on the professor’s notes, when helpful.
- On the right hand page, take notes that help clarify or flesh out the prof’s notes.
- AFTER class, review the major points covered in class (highlighting the topics on both your left- and right-hand pages can help you to keep things straight).
- Create summary sheets that allow you to test your understanding, and practice with potential test questions.
