Test-Taking — Ongoing Preparation

Moving material from short-term (fresh) to long-term (established) memory is critically important:

Daily review: take 10 minutes after each lecture to review class notes, as soon as possible (same-day).

  • Identify key elements as soon after class as possible.
  • Be sure you can make sense of what you’ve written: is repair work/fill-in needed?

Weekly review: get the “big picture” on this week’s material.

  • Integrate the information (notes and related readings) covered in the last week—tie them to major themes in the course.
  • In addition to your in-depth work with the week’s material, spend about one hour per class on “big picture” thinking (weekends are great for this)—how does it fit into what has come before? Are there any large-scale comparisons that can be set up for review?

Find ways to reformat material as you go, keeping in mind the way you will be tested on this (Studying Strategies).
