Reading & Annotating Texts — READ
Getting the Meat:
Break the chapter into chunks (e.g., subheading to subheading). Then, at the end of each chunk:
- Take note of new vocabulary words or concepts—as they arise, you can set up 3×5 cards or other helps for future review.
- Find relevant definitions by going to the glossary or index (or, if these aren’t helpful, a reference book).
- Wait to mark the text until you’ve finished the chunk: after reading, you’ll have a better sense of what needs to be highlighted/underlined—avoid “turning the page yellow”.
- Write cues in the margin (if room), to prepare for later review.
- Don’t work much longer than 1 hour before a break—overload keeps you from thinking/absorbing well. Know your own limitations and build this into your time management plan.
