Taking Stock:
You want to make sure that you will be able to recall this information, not just recognize it. True learning comes from being able to make it your own.
The more senses you use, the more successful you will be in remembering this material.
Talk to yourself (or someone else). Chunk by chunk, talk out loud to yourself and/or write a paraphrase of what that chunk has taught you.
- Vocal rehearsal (paraphrasing or summarizing out loud) allows you to hear, as well as to create the paraphrase.
- Writing/diagramming allows you to create a structure for further study.
Both of these have the added advantage of confirming your understanding—you won’t be able to do this step if you don’t understand the material.
