Studying Strategies — Taking Control
Reformat: reorganize the material in some way. Possibilities include
- Charts
- Tables
- Graphs
- Diagrams
- Concept Mapping
- Models
- Formulas
- Equations
- Opposites
- Pictures
- Simulations
Rehearse/recite, verbally or in written form. Use one or more of three learning modalities: seeing/hearing/tactile manipulation. This solidifies memory better than using just one sense--the more ways your brain is engaged ith the material, the more long-lasting the memory.
- You remember about 10 percent of what you read…
- 20 percent of what you hear…
- 30 percent of what you see…
- 50 percent of what you hear AND see…
- 70 percent of what you say (if you think while you say it)…
- 90 percent of what you do.
Paraphrase: Condense, summarize in your own words (vs. parroting)
- This creates information that belongs to YOU. The act of working through the information and reformatting it for your own understanding is the most important element of study.
- Can you explain it without looking at the material? If not, you don’t understand it yet!
