Choosing & Declaring a Major — Education
Utilize resources at the University and online to determine what majors complement the skills and interests that you possess.
Step 3: Identify an area of academic interest.
UST’s Interest Areas can help you narrow it down: they include arts & humanities, business related, elementary & early childhood education, environmental studies, life & health sciences, physical & applied sciences, social sciences, and university studies.
Putting it into practice: Complete this chart to determine your area of academic interest and review the available majors listed within that area.
Step 4: Begin researching majors within your identified area of interest.
- Review the list of undergraduate programs & minors in the UD Catalog and eliminate those that you know you would not be interested in pursuing.
- Log on to the UST Interest Area webpage to explore the majors you are interested in. Use the links provided to read the curriculum guide for the major and review the department’s website.
- Use the UD Catalog to see the complete list of course requirements for the majors you are considering.
- You may also wish to see potential careers that are linked to the majors you are considering. You can log on to the Career Services website and look at the Major and Career Communities.
- Finally, for more specific information about careers associated with the majors you have identified, you can use the Occupational Outlook Handbook to learn more about education requirements, salary, job prospects, related occupations, etc.
